A 60-MINUTE HUMOR WRITING WORKSHOP WITH ZOE ROGERS

Cracking the Joke: A Humor-writing workshop for the comedy curious

Thursday, September 10th at noon MT / 2 pm ET

Do you wish your writing was funnier but you don’t know where to begin? Have you thought of hitting a comedy open mic but don’t want to embarrass yourself? We can help. Join stand-up comic and comedy producer Zoe Rogers and writer/comic Steph Smith for an inside look at what actually makes a joke work. Zoe will break down the formulas stand-up comics use to build laughs from the ground up, and Steph will translate those same structures into humor writing for essays, blog posts, and storytelling. Together, they'll share tips and techniques for generating joke ideas — whether you're headed for the stage or the page. The workshop will include humor technique examples, freewriting exercises, a list of do's and don'ts, and examples of both stand-up bits and humor writing passages.

I WANT IN!

You'll come away with:

  • A clear understanding of what makes a joke land — from the setups and structures stand-up comics rely on to the techniques that translate humor onto the page.
  • Practical tools for generating joke ideas, models for building comedic timing into their own writing
  • An understanding of how to identify your personal brand of funny
  • A detailed look at how humor works across formats, whether for stand-up, humorous essays, blog posts, or live storytelling.

The Pause:

A creative community for midlife women

The Pause is a creative community for midlife women who feel something shifting and want a place to reconnect with their creative spark. You might be rethinking your work, your relationships, your writing, or even who you are in this season. You might be in the process of outgrowing old systems that aren't working anymore, or shedding a skin.

Here, you will find women who are thoughtful, curious, and willing to connect on a deep level. Women who are building new things. Women who are letting go of old things. Women who are simply trying to listen to their own voices again and to figure out what stories they really want to tell. If you are craving connection, inspiration, and steady forward movement in a supportive community, you are welcome here.
